While finishing up his fourth year at Vanderbilt University, Jack Butler started his first year in law school rather than waiting until after completion of Vanderbilt. While in his last year of law school at Vanderbilt, he also had a wife and two young children and worked 40 hours a week for the Tennessee Air National Guard.

He joined the Tennessee Air National Guard at age 16 and was transferred to the United States Air Force for basic training and other schools. During his time in the Air National Guard, he served as Director of Security, Director of Intelligence, Director of Riot Control Training and Director of the Firing Range.  After spending 20 years in the Air National Guard, Jack retired, with recognition, at the rank of Major.

After completing law school at the Nashville School of Law, he began instructing at the Nashville School of Law. Jack is presently an instructor at the Nashville School of Law where he has served for 40 years. At the time, he was the youngest person ever elected to the Nashville Bar Association Board of Directors and served as President of the Young Lawyers (Barristers) Club.

Prior to finishing law school, Jack Butler worked as a claims adjuster for a large insurance company where he acquired his experience from dealing with personal injury cases; an education which could not be bought.  It was at that time that Jack Butler decided to represent plaintiffs once he was licensed to practice law and has ever since 1962.  Jack Butler also handles criminal cases and has since the same period of time, as well as workers’ compensation cases.  In addition to attorney referrals, Jack Butler also assist young lawyers in dealing with their personal injury cases by either being associated with them or giving them advice on handling their case.

He has held the AV pre-eminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the leading authoritative resource for the legal profession, and has been placed on the Bar Registry of Preeminent Lawyers and named to Super Lawyers in the Southeast in the category of Plaintiff Litigation.  He also has recently been named 1 of 100 of the Best Trial Lawyers in the Southeast. He has been listed in Best Lawyers in America in the field of Personal Injury since its inception, or for 25 years.

Jack Butler has held the following positions or received the following honors:

  • Board of Directors of Nashville Bar Association 1966 and 1970.
  • Served as Vice-President of Nashville Bar Association 1969 and 1970.
  • Chairman of numerous Bar related committees throughout his career and served on the Board of Governors of the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association (now Tennessee Association for Justice) and Treasurer of the same organization.
  • Named Chairman of the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association Liaison Committee with the Tennessee Bar Association while working with doctors trying to smooth out any difficulties that existed between the Bar Association and the Medical Society.
  • Member of American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and former Treasurer and past President of Tennessee Chapter of ABOTA
  • Served on NITA Faculty at the University of Tennessee in 1978 and at Vanderbilt University in 1988.
  • Speaks quite often at personal injury seminars for the National Business Institute.
  • Listed in the Best Lawyers in Nashville Magazine, September 1998, and the National Registry of Who’s Who in American Law.
  • Received the faculty award with the Nashville School of Law, March 2001.
  • Listed in Business Nashville Magazine, August 2008, as Best Lawyers in Nashville in the category of  personal injury and workers’ compensation.
  • Member of The Association of Plaintiffs’ Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America.
  • Elected one of the Best 100 Trial Attorneys in Tennessee.
